Elvis Presley's Mercedes - Benz Limo Sold!

A Mercedes-Benz, once owned by ‘the King of Rock and Roll’ Elvis Presley, was sold by Bonhams at Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey for $ 130,000. Restored to a very high standard, this rare piece of Elvis Presley history attracted a great deal of interest and in the end it went to Germany.
Two other notable cars at this sale were a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ Coupe which sold for £441,500, and a magnificent 1913 Rolls-Royce 45/59hp Silver Ghost Open Drive Limousine that went for £419,500. Motorcars spanning all periods, types and marques went under the hammer, including a Ferrari 550 GTZ, which was one of only five examples of the car bodied by the famous Italian carrozzeria Zagato, and the only right hand drive. This car sold for £353,500.
Elvis’s 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 Saloon Limousine in powder blue was one of only a handful of cars that the singer registered himself, and one of two 600 Mercedes that he owned.
Presley owned the car for two years before he gave it to one of his friends, James Leroy Robertson. It was purchased by the current vendor in 2005 from Robertson Motors Memphis, although the Elvis Presley fan club attempted to get the car quarantined as they considered it a national treasure that should not leave the USA.
At the time that he took delivery of this car he was in the process of rebuilding his career which had been in the doldrums for some years. This process started with his ‘Comeback Special TV show in December 1968, NBC’s highest rated show of the season. Keen to resume live performing he began a series of engagements at the newly opened International Hotel in Las Vegas which continued until his tragic death in August 1977.
Elvis Presley had a life-long love affair with motorcars, most famously his pink Cadillac. Lesser known was his penchant for Mercedes-Benz 600s, two of which he added to his collection in the 1970s. Over thirty years later, one of these Mercedes-Benz 600s found itself in the UK, where it was offered as part of Bonhams’ sale of Important Motor Cars and Automobilia.

Million Dollar Quartet Day In The Big Apple!

On Saturday, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg declared December 4, 2010 "MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Day" in honor of the 54th anniversary of the real life jam session which brought together Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins together a legendary jam session. The mayoral proclamation was read from the stage of the Nederlander Theatre (208 West 41st Street) by Katherine Oliver, the commissioner of the New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment.
Below is an excerpt from the proclamation:
The City of New York is proud to join MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET in celebrating the anniversary of the meeting of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins, upon which this musical is based...
Tonight's special celebratory performance is a testament to the continuing relevance and vitality of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins, and the overwhelming impact they had on the music community over the course of their careers. Today, I join with all New Yorkers in giving MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET a standing ovation.
Now therefore, I, Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, do hereby proclaim Saturday, December 4th, 2010 in the City of New York as: "MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Day."
On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins together. The place was Sun Records' storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the "Father of Rock and Roll," who discovered them all. The four young musicians united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.
Inspired by the actual event, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET features a treasure trove of the greatest rock and roll, gospel, R&B and country hits from these musicians, including such iconic songs as "Blue Suede Shoes," "Fever," "Sixteen Tons," "Who Do You Love?," "Great Balls of Fire," "Riders in the Sky," "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues," and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET captures the infectious spirit, freewheeling excitement and thrilling sounds of a singular moment when four of the music industry's most extraordinary talents, all in their creative prime, came together for one of the most memorable nights in music history.

Elvis fan Killed By Spiked Drink

I've seen some pretty bad behavior amongst Elvis fans towards each other but this one takes the cake!
An Elvis Presley fan was killed by a friend who spiked his drink with drugs after he refused to stop singing.
Father-of-five Nilesh Devsee was found by friends under a table in his kitchen the morning after a party at his Wellingborough home in September this year.
At Northampton Crown Court on Friday, Patrick Kenrick, of Bath Road, Kettering, was jailed
ADVERTISEMENTfor three-and-a-half years after admitting the manslaughter of Mr Devsee by putting Subutex – a drug used to block the effects of heroin – in a pint of beer before encouraging him to 'down' the pint.
An argument broke out between the pair after Mr Devsee, 51, would not stop singing along to Elvis tracks so Kenrick, 36, could watch television.
Matthew Lowe, prosecuting, said: "During the evening, through drink, friction developed between the defendant and Mr Devsee. The defendant was singing to the stereo that was playing Elvis songs. The defendant wanted to watch TV and turn the stereo down.
"Some time after the dispute a witness described the defendant encouraging Mr Devsee to consume a glass of beer as part of a drinking game.
"The defendant turned to the female at the party and said 'I have put the Subutex in his drink'."
One by one, the group went to sleep and woke the next morning to find Mr Devsee dead. Another member of the group asked Kenrick if he had spiked the drink. He replied "don't be silly, I would not do that."
In mitigation, Steven Evans said: "The defendant takes responsibly for causing the death of his friend, he is deeply ashamed and sorry."
Sentencing Kenrick, Judge Charles Wide said: "What you did that night was completely unacceptable."

Elvis Guru Dies

American singer-actor and cultural icon Elvis Presley's guru Sri Daya Mata, 96, has died in Los Angeles (USA) area. According to reports, Elvis met Daya Mata, president and sanghamata of worldwide Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) headquartered in Los Angeles, in 1960s, and then kept connection with her throughout the rest of his life, often calling and meeting her for guidance/advice.
Reports suggest that Elvis meditated with Daya Mata, read her book " Only Love", enjoyed spending time with her, had a feeling of peace in her presence, used to call her Ma (short for mother), turned to her for spiritual guidance frequently, remarked that she was like a saint, had high respect for her and listened to her, queried her for a short-cut for initiation into Kriya Yoga, and asked her questions like: Why did God make me Elvis Presley.
Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that it was with a great sense of loss that we bid good-bye to Daya Mata, who was an inspiration and full of divine love who touched many lives on the spiritual journey. She nobly fulfilled her spiritual responsibilities with phenomenal spiritual strength and was spiritual mother to many.
Harmony of religions was very dear to her and her selfless service was exemplary, Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, added.
An ex-Mormon, Daya Mata (Mother of Compassion), born Faye Wright (1914 in Salt Lake City, USA), held this position of spiritual and administrative head of SRF for 55 years. Public Memorial Service for her will be held on December 12 in Pasadena ( California, USA).
SRF is a worldwide religious organization founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda, who is known for acclaimed spiritual classic "Autobiography of a Yogi" (1946) which has been translated into over two dozen languages. With Mrinalini Mata as the Vice President, it reportedly has about 600 temples, retreats, ashrams, and meditation centers worldwide and has presence in about 175 countries and lays stress on Kriya Yoga. Its sister organization Yogoda Satsanga Society (YSS) of India, founded in 1917 at Dakshineswar near Kolkata, reportedly runs over 100 centers, retreats, and ashrams in India and neighboring countries besides 21 educational institutions and some charitable facilities.
Aims/ideals of SRF include: to disseminate among the nations a knowledge of definite scientific techniques for attaining direct personal experience of God, to reveal the complete harmony and basic oneness of original Christianity as taught by Jesus Christ and original Yoga as taught by Bhagavan Krishna, to point out the one divine highway to which all paths of true religious beliefs eventually lead, to unite science and religion through realization of the unity of their underlying principles, etc.
