A peek into famous soldiers' service Newly unsealed American military files provide a different side of lives of prominent personalities In a fireproof fortress at the centre of the continent, a million boxes hold a billion pages of new truths about old soldiers. It is the new U.S. National Archives Personnel Records building, dedicated last week and built to hold, for all eternity, the histories of American military veterans both famous and forgotten, telling us how they served - or fell in glory - on the battlefield, from the skies or deep in the pitiless sea. Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Robinson, John Coltrane, John Dillinger, Clark Gable, Jack Kerouac, Joe Louis, Roberto Clemente, Arthur Fiedler, Steve McQueen, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Humphrey Bogart, Doctor Seuss - warriors all, detached from their regiments now as so-called Persons of Exceptional Prominence. Files are unsealed for public viewing when a famous soldier or sailor

Dewey Phillips' boys meet the cast of "Memphis" the musical

Dewey Phillips' Family Meets 'Memphis' Cast: MyFoxMEMPHIS.com Anxious theater goers waited to see Memphis the Musical since it kicked off its national tour at The Orpheum, but none were as nervous as the Phillips brothers, Randy and Jerry. "I am looking forward to watching it," said Randy. "I am sure it will meet or exceed my expectations." They had never seen the production based loosely on their dad, legendary Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips. His character in the musical is named Huey Calhoun and played by Bryan Fenkart. "He sounds a lot like my dad; his mannerisms were a lot like my dad's were." Randy's wife Doris of 37 years never met her father-in-law. "I feel like I know him because I have heard all those stories all these many years, and I think those two are full of Dewey!" The family had not been told of a surprise FOX13 set up for them, a meeting that left a lasting impression on the family and a cast me

Chris Isaak, Elvis & Priscilla Presley

Image
SAN FRANCISCO – Bill's Place is Chris Isaak's kind of place. Great burgers, sinful fries and saucy waitresses. There's something decidedly retro about the joint. Ditto the guy digging into his lunch out on the patio, given his, well, let's just say it, Elvis voice and looks. "The '50s was a pretty wonderful time for people, it was hopeful," says Isaak, 55. "But I didn't record this new album out of nostalgia." Isaak's new disc, Beyond the Sun , out Oct. 18, was recorded with his longtime band at Memphis' fabled Sun Studios , and includes both rock staples (from Great Balls of Fire to Ring of Fire) and uptempo originals such as the album's first single, Live It Up. But in tackling this material, Isaak wasn't interested in lionizing an era ("The '50s had polio and racism, too," he says bluntly) but rather paying tribute to his modest childhood in scrappy Stockton, Calif. A memorable serenade Chris Isaak kne

Big hopes for Elvis' Circle G Ranch

Elvis Presley's former weekend ranch getaway off Goodman Road in between Horn Lake and Walls is the subject of the latest effort by an Elvis fan to save the honeymoon cottage, barn and walking bridge from simply rotting into oblivion. There have been scores of attempts over the years, ranging from foreign investors, a diamond mine owner and race car enthusiast, and even subdivision developers to transform the former ranch into a profitable enterprise. Lesley Pilling, founder and director of the Friends of Elvis, Save The Circle G campaign, who calls herself "a lifelong Elvis fan," is behind the effort. "We have received some wonderful messages of support and encouragement from those who knew and loved Elvis including Joe Esposito, Linda Thompson and Larry Geller, to just name a few," Pilling said. "We hope that the ranch could not only become another must see site for Elvis fans visiting Memphis, but it would also become a valued and much used facility for

Cricket Coulter @ Elvis Week 2011

Image
During Elvis Week 2011, Cricket Coulter , best known to Elvis fans as the girl in That's The Way It Is , spoke at the Elvis Week Wrap Up Party. Cricket was a super fan who followed Elvis around from California, Vegas & Memphis. She knew Elvis for 11 years. The Wrap Up party took place on August 16th, 2011 hosted by Patsy Andersen at the Clarion East hotel, located at 6101 Shelby Oaks Drive, Memphis, TN. Other guests included Judd Phillips ( Sam Phillips nephew ), Rose Clayton ( author of Dr. Nick's book and other books ), Bill Black's children , Louis and Nancy , Jerry Presley ( cousin ), and Will McDaniel ( Elvis called him Bardahl ). For those of us who have been attending Elvis Week since the beginning, this event was very much like the classic Fan Club Presidents Luncheons. And for some of the fans who have recently started attended Elvis Week, they said they wished the official Elvis Week events were like this one. Lots of fun and laughs. Catching

TNT cancels Memphis Beat

It's official, Memphis Beat has been cancelled. And after suffering through season two, I understand why. Season one was quirky, fun and entertaining. Season two was all over the road like road kill. In other words, it jumped the shark in season two. No surprise to me. There was nothing Memphis about the show.

Kid Rock Supports Hank Jr.

Image
Kid Rock Wears Pro-Hank Williams, Jr. T-Shirt to Lions Game DETROIT (WJBK) - Kid Rock's Monday Night Football attire may have been carefully selected to showcase his support for Hank Williams, Jr ., whose musical intro was pulled from the show last week. The hometown rocker was spotted wearing a pro- Hank t-shirt inside the Lions locker room following the team's 24-13 win over the Chicago Bears. The front of the black shirt showed a donkey with the writing above it: "If You Don't Like Hank Jr. You Can Kiss My (A**).   Last week, ESPN announced it had "decided to part ways" with Williams in the wake of his comments that appeared to compare President Obama to Adolf Hitler. ESPN had already pulled the country music star's' musical intro from " Monday Night Football" on the back of his controversial appearance on FOX News Channel's "FOX & Friends" last Monday morning. There is no indication whether the shirt was p

Priscilla Presley on changes to Viva Elvis

Image
Viva ELVIS has been running for almost two years at the Aria Resort in Las Vegas. But the Cirque du Soleil  has announced  that the show is going to undergo some alterations. Exactly what those changes are going to be, however, nobody seems to know yet. Not even Priscilla Presley. Nor Cirque du Soleil’s Gilles St. Croix, who was one of two artistic guides (the other was Cirque owner Guy Laliberté) involved with the creation of the show. I spoke with Presley and St. Croix recently during the opening night party of the Cirque du Soleil’s IRIS in Los Angeles. Neither one could (or would) say anything concrete about the changes, which seem to be still a matter of discussion. But Priscilla, whom I accidentally crossed paths with on the way into the party,  assured me that there was no conflict between her and the Cirque du Soleil on the rethink of the show. “We’re definitely both on the same page,” she said, adding that she didn’t want anyone to get the impression that there was anythin

Elvis Presley's Dr. Nick speaks about Dr. Conrad Murray trial

Doctors to 'The Kings': Presley's Dr. Nick on Conrad Murray: MyFoxMEMPHIS.com MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The trial continues for Dr. Conrad Murray, the personal physician of Michael Jackson, charged with the involuntary manslaughter of the pop icon. Jackson's bodyguard was the first person to reach Jackson's bedroom after Dr. Murray urgently called for help. He testified that he was told by Dr. Murray to hide medicine vials before calling 911. The prosecution is using this testimony to argue Murray delayed calling 911 in order to cover up evidence that he was giving Jackson Propofol, a surgical anesthetic drug. The mysterious circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Michael Jackson has drawn numerous comparisons to the unexpected death of another musical icon 34 years ago. But, Elvis Presley's former personal physician, George Nichopoulos, said the medical treatment and care given both men were far different. One was the acclaimed King of Rock N' Roll, the

Nashville Cats: Salute to DJ Fontana

Image
Saturday, October 22, 2011 : 1:30pm Nashville Cats: Salute to Session Player D.J. Fontana Nashville Cats D.J. Fontana became one of the most influential drummers in music history through his work with Elvis Presley and the Blue Moon Boys (Scotty Moore and Bill Black). Influenced by the swing of big band music, with an innate feel for country and rhythm & blues, Fontana was a perfect fit for Presley and his band. Just listen to the crack of the snare on "Jailhouse Rock" or to Fontana's fills on "Hound Dog." In addition to over 460 Presley tracks, Fontana drummed on records by artists in the country (Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Waylon Jennings) and rock (Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, and Cheap Trick) worlds. At eighty years old, he continues to travel and record. This interview will be illustrated with vintage photographs, film footage, and recordings. Followed by a signing in the Museum Store. Elvis NEVER lived in Zsa Zsa Gabor's Bel Air Mansion

Image
Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband Prince von A-hole , I mean Prince von Anhalt has been telling the press for years now that Zsa Zsa's Bel Air estate was once owned by Howard Hughes and Elvis Presley . In fact, they even claimed to have bought the home directly from Elvis ' estate after he died. But Gabor also once claimed to have bought the home directly from Howard Hughes as well. But now Barbara Yobs, a local mortgage banker tells LA Weekly that in fact, her grandparents built the home and then sold it directly to Gabor in 1973. Yobs said having the prince say all these things really got to her. She also gave a copy of the deed to prove the value of the home was not $600,000 as they claimed. Gabor paid 250,000 for the home. Yobs, a proud granddaughter would like her grandparents history in the home to be known. John and Gladys Zurlo. Her grandfather was in the real estate business buying, selling and even building properties. They built this home in 1955 and lived there u
