Carjacking at Tunica Casino - Police Chase To Memphis
MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Moments after an elderly couple was carjacked in the parking lot of Bally's Casino in Tunica, the suspect was spotted by a Walls, Mississippi officer. The pursuit went from Mississippi to Memphis and was all caught on camera.
Suspect Yarley Lyons went to great lengths to avoid arrest. The wild pursuit was all caught on the dashboard camera of the Walls Police Chief Gary Boisseau.
"Our police chief, Gary Boisseau, was listening on the radio and intercepted the vehicle which came through the town of Walls," said Walls prosecutor Stan Little.
Little walked Action News 5 through the chase from the moment Boisseau caught up with Lyons' stolen car on Highway 61. At one point, the champagne-colored Bonneville pulled over.
"Both officers get out of their respective cars with both their guns drawn," said Little. "As they approach the suspect's vehicle, he takes off."
Lyons crossed the state line into Memphis and finally bailed out when Boisseau rear ended him at Third Street and Western Park Drive. Lyons disappeared into the woods on foot.
Lyons covered a lot of ground in the eight hours police were looking for him. They caught up with him in the 3000 block of Chisca in Memphis.
Little said he wants criminals to know they are not protected by the boundaries of jurisdiction when the public's safety is at risk.
"I hope that sends a message that regardless of what you do, if you come down here dead set on committing a crime, we're going to pursue you wherever you may go," said Little.
Lyons has been transferred from Shelby County to Tunica County. He is facing charged of carjacking, kidnapping and robbery. His bond was set at $300,000.
He could face additional charges for running from police in Mississippi and Memphis.
